Trulia’s Favorite Homes of 2016

new mexico homes for sale in utah
From the affordable to the amazing, these are the properties we couldn’t get enough of this year.

What do a teeny-tiny off-the-grid hideaway, an “earthship,” and a remote family retreat on an island all have in common? No, they aren’t settings for the latest, critically acclaimed show to hit Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu (though that would be a good guess!). These are just three of the most-viewed homes on Trulia this year. From Imnaha, OR, to Linden, TN, here are some of our favorite properties that captured your attention (again and again) this year.

1. Tiny home on the range

$37,500, River Canyon Road, Imnaha, OR 97842

At only 196 square feet, this hidden retreat is perfect for creativity — it would be perfect as a writer’s or painter’s retreat. The porch and double-pane windows overlook the mountains, offering endless inspiration. (If you need a more dramatic scene, it’s only a short trek to the incredible vistas of Hells Canyon on the Snake River.) You won’t necessarily have to “rough it” either. Electricity is accessible, and the house is approved for a standard septic system.

2. A very rare ranch

$8.235 million, 2700 N. Valley View Road, Ashland, OR 97520

Perched on a mountain, this 8,881-square-foot ranch looks out on your own 700-acre kingdom of lush, unspoiled property surrounded by even more mountains. While it sounds like something you’d find in the Seven Kingdoms, this “castle” is entirely real. The stunning setting isn’t the only thing that brings Game of Thrones to mind — the cloud-shaped windows, impressive arched front doors (carved by local artist Russell Beebe), carved trees throughout the foyer, a granite floor that resembles a river, and the gasp-worthy staircase filled with carved branch and nature motifs all feel worthy of the Lord of Winterfell.

3. Lovely lakefront cottage

$435,000, 4501–4509 Anthony Isl., Hustisford, WI 53034

Who wouldn’t love two homes for the price of one? You get just that with this family-style compound set on five island lots on Anthony Island on Lake Sinissippi. Imagine what life would be like on this slice of paradise, savoring your morning coffee as eagles, great blue herons, ospreys, and white pelicans start the day with you. If you want to see such majesty up close, the “bonuses” included with the property will get you there: It comes with two boats, a 23-foot pontoon and a 21-foot Malibu Sunsetter ski boat!

4. Off-the-grid getaway

$349,000, 19359 N. 4000 E, Whiterocks, UT 84085

This solar-powered home attracts the attention of anyone looking to truly get away from daily stress (and who appreciates outdoor recreation). The one-bedroom, one-bathroom 640-square-foot log cabin was built in 1976 and comes with 20 acres to call your own. Nestled between Ashley National Forest, the Uinta Mountain Range, and a bubbling river, you’ll enjoy great fishing, hiking, and panoramic views.

5. Sleek meets West

$165,000, 7717 Sandlewood Drive NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120

With its affordable price and distinctive Southwestern look, this three-bedroom, three-bathroom home in western Albuquerque, NM, makes for a fantastic starter home. Don’t let the circa-1987 construction date turn you off. The tile floors and all-new kitchen give the interior a fresh look and feel, which is especially enhanced by the light-boosting bay window.

6. Unconventional curb appeal

$515,000, 17 Earthship Way, Taos, NM 87571

Designed by architect Mike Reynolds, this Taos, NM, home sparks the imagination just by the name of the style: “earthship.” The boundary-pushing, two-bedroom, 1,900-square-foot home is innovative inside and out. Take the aqua-botanical system, where a fishpond feeds a vegetable garden with nutrient-rich water. And though it would stick out in any other neighborhood, this stunning home is located in the Greater World Community, a neighborhood of homes with a similar point of view.

7. Jaw-dropping luxury

$85 million, 635 W. 42nd St., New York, NY 10036

As any real estate lover will tell you, million-dollar homes aren’t uncommon. (After all, there are multiple reality shows that cover only those pricey properties.) But you definitely don’t see an $85 million home every day, which is probably one reason why this New York, NY, property made our most-viewed list. You don’t get just an apartment for that tony price — you get an entire floor! And a live-in butler for a year. And a private chef. And courtside season tickets to the Brooklyn Nets. A $1 million yacht with dock fees for five years. Two Rolls-Royce Phantoms. Need we go on? This is a listing dreams really are made of.

8. Upcycled chic

$174,995, 1709 Dan St., Houston TX 77020

This prototype home is a glimpse at the design potential of shipping containers. Located in Houston, TX, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom home is a stone’s throw from downtown and has all the features you’d expect in a more traditional-style home: granite countertops, decorative stone, laminate flooring, front and back decks, and a foliage-filled lot. And at 1,228 square feet, it’ll never make you feel “boxed in.”

9. Sweet mountain cottage

$699,000, 2111 Sugar Pine Road, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150

Although it’s only 420 square feet, the value of this one-bedroom, one-bathroom property comes from its incredible location. Situated in the gated Cascade Properties, the South Lake Tahoe, CA, home offers views of the aptly named Heavenly Ski Resort and the Sierra Mountains and gives you access to the lake, beach, and a shared pier. Whether indoors or out, there’s something beautiful to enjoy, like pine walls, a vaulted and beamed ceiling, and tiered gardens.

10. Pristine and peaceful

$69,900, 219 Red Bank Road, Linden, TN 37096

Notice a theme on this list? Tiny mountain homes ruled 2016. The smallest of Trulia’s most-viewed homes, a 153-square-foot cottage, rounds out the top 10. Perhaps it’s the fact the small retreat has all the comforts of home, like electricity and air conditioning (you can also tap into well water). Or perhaps it’s the quiet location on 2 lush acres of woods and forest. Regardless, this pint-sized property makes a big impression, again and again.
